mulberry garden

a mulberry sapling growing from the concrete soils of torontos landfill park. which mulberry of the many species this is i have not researched. it could be the native north american, that asian, or the increasingly common hybrid of the two, they are hardier than a lot of mulberries and so a good bet it's one of them.

self sown or planted by the cities parks and recreation department i ve no idea. there was no stake or stem shield and while they might plant the native species it's not likely they would plant the asian type in this park which they go to some trouble eradicating exotic plants. so my guess its a self sown plant of one of the three mentioned above, though there are no other mature and fruiting mulberry trees that i've seen in this park. perhaps a bird planted it after a meal of fruit from a tree further inland.

accidental garden--walled garden

secret walled off area during maintenance construction on the grounds of the r.c.harris water pumping station. a large amount of excavated soil has been mounded at one end. the weeds seem to be flourishing on the mound contrasted to the plants on the field level. an interesting example of how well loosened soil produces a better crop of plants.

palladio--goethe

teatro vicenza-olimpico web site

"(september 19) arrived some hours ago and have already seen the teatro olimpico and other buildings by palladio. ... you have to see these buildings with your own eyes to realize how good they are. no reproductions of palladio s designs give an adequate idea of the harmony of their dimensions; they must be seen in their actual perspective.

palladio was a great man, both in his conceptions and in his power of execution. his major problem was that which confronts all modern architects, namely, how to make proper use of the columns in domestic architecture, since a combination of columns and walls must always be a contradiction.

how hard he worked at that, how the tangible presence of his creations make us forget that we are being hypnotized! there is something devine about his talent, something comparable to the power of a great poet who, out of the worlds of truth and falsehood, creates a third whose borrowed existence enchants us."
