accidental temple

the structural framing on the west wall of an office building east of front street sherbourne. the exposed brick pilasters alternating with the wall surfaces gives the west side of the building the appearance of a simple classical temple. the buildings other facades have a stripped down classical design but the west side is most marked by it.

the brick pilasters have been set so their faces are in line with the face of the wall between them. the change in material from brick to a capital of stone is the detail that crosses the line between generic structure and clearly marks them as classical.
