that time in the early nineteen eighties i found a single asparagus plant growing wild on a north slope of the red deer river valley, it was near a path by the mall. i had read about harvesting weeds for salads and specifically about the wild asparagus in euell gibbons book on foraging.
there were enough stems to make a single meal for one person. i pulled the thin stems from the soil and headed back to the house. i boiled some water lowered the asparagus in and after a few minutes tried one, they were wild so a little tough. a few more minutes and i drained the water added some butter and ate the tips of each stem. my first wild asparagus and my last wild asparagus.
